About the CoE-SEA

Industries and organizations across the world are facing stiff challenges in meeting the safety and health requirements of the stakeholders. Industry 4.0, the forth industrial revolution that uses cyber physical systems (CPS) has also brought low tolerance level in the operations and imposes huge challenges in the field. Some of the important reasons are (i) poor preparedness, (ii) absence of trained personnel due to low or no safety education at university level, (iii) lack of scientific research, and (iv) weak industry institute partnership. Upon assessing the present status on safety engineering and analytics, and the national needs & requirements, IIT Kharagpur, being an internationally recognized technical institution of India having a number of experts with proven knowledge, expertise, and consulting & research experiences in safety engineering and analytics, has established the Centre of Excellence in Safety Engineering and Analytics (CoE-SEA) in July 2020.

Vision

The CoE-SEA embodies to act as the hub for learning & practice, knowledge creation, standardization, repository, and dissemination of knowledge and information covering the broad domain of safety engineering & management, occupational and environmental health, human factors & industrial ergonomics, and disaster management.

Mission

  • To become global benchmark for safety education, training, consulting and research
  • To create national level repository of safety and related data
  • To be a continuous source of support to industries and service organizations
  • To develop highly qualified human resources for strategic level positions in industries
  • To build in competencies in working professionals through outreach programs
  • To develop and implement industry 4.0/5.0 technologies and solutions for accident prevention

Organizational Ecosystem

The Steering Committee will take inputs from the Advisory Committee for policy decisions, program evaluation, and strategic planning, and be supported by the Technical Expert Committee. The day to day activities of the CoE are performed by the CoE faculty which takes inputs and advices from the Steering Committee. The CoE faculty members are supported by other teams and individuals within and outside IIT Kharagpur such as faculty from other departments/schools/centers of IIT Kharagpur, CoE research team, IIT Kharagpur students and alumni, visiting professors & scholars, engineers, and industry experts. The CoE-SEA ecosystem works synergistically, is flexible and amenable to absorb changes for its sustainable development.
